Thanks for the tips ! The price of the Littman certainly keeps away those who are merely... curious. It worked for me.
On deeper reflection, I wonder if I haven't been thinking backwards. Instead of going smaller, lighter, and less obtrusive, why not go the other way ? Why strain so hard to squeeze sharpness out of miniature negatives ?
So why not bite the bullet, and bring the old 5x7 Kodak 2D with its cherry wood, brass finish, and red bellows ? I already own one. My consumer-level scanner is more than adequate to make lovely prints as large as I need. No need to get a $2000 Nikon scanner and slow-speed film. With the money I save, I can get a lightweight tripod.
Whenever I have used a wooden field camera, it has been a magnet for friendly passers-by. The quaint appearance of the camera puts people at ease. Being made of wood, and already quite old, who cares if gets scratched up a bit more ?
