Recently, going thru my files, found this negative. Never printed it originally, because it seemed underexposed and not so interesting on the contact sheet.

The photo is from the early 1970s soon after the Twin Towers opened.
Just out of school and very new to LF at the time. The site intrigued me.

It felt appropriate to work on the print now in remembrance of 9/11.

Dennis, this is a wonderful image and brings out great deal of emotion because of the subject. I went there pretty much every year because of family in NJ and the last time I saw these buildings was just a week before 9/11.

Speaking of remembering: The early 1970's was when I came on board with that same basic gear, film and developer. It's amazing to recognize the look after all the intervening years.

Did you use a deep yellow filter, perhaps a G ? A 90 or 120mm lens, in the neighborhood of 1/60 at f/22 ?

Well I was gonna keep my thoughts to myself, but Ken asked.
The Towers look great.
I hate to see older TV shows and movies that show them on the skyline- it just brings back the horror I felt on that day.
But the sky has a look of over-shooping at the bottom of the sky. Perhaps it is the upward angle that catches nothing but blue- like a shot in the super clear air of the desert- unreal to folks who spend most time where there is haze

I appreciate your kind remarks.

Ken, your comment prompted me to dig up my original exposure record because I could not recall the lens used.
I would have guessed as you did, but found that it was actually a 150. My notes indicate 150 was the only lens with me that day.
I do not recall the exact vantage point, but know the buildings were quite distant, i.e. I was probably near or at the river. At that distance, the 150 provided pretty good coverage.

The exposure was f16 @ 1/30 sec. TRI-X was rated at 250.
I did not use any filter (despite the dark sky)


The "dark sky" leads into EdWorkman's comment:

As mentioned in the post, this negative was not up to standard. It lacks density and contrast - perhaps due to poor development. A decent wet print is not likely.

A while back I scanned the negative and recently had a chance to process in Photoshop. A lighter sky was quite dull looking, so I allowed it to go dark. That seemed to enhance the overall image and placed emphasis on the buildings - my ultimate goal.

I'll plead guilty to using creative controls and artistic discretion !
