Interesting read. There are 3 similar forts that had those disappearing guns at one time built in the same period in the Puget Sound region north of Seattle. My shots of it are in 120 format though.

"NOTHING GROWS HERE

These hills are inhospitable to plants. The surface clay particles absorb rain water so well they saturate and seal so moisture cannot penetrate, and hold water so tightly most plants cannot draw it out. Beneath the surface the clay is of hardpan, which is impenetrable to plant roots. Also, the loose surface provides a poor foothold for roots, making it easy for plants to wash away in heavy rains.

All this, combined with poor nutrient conditions and hot, dry summers, keep the Painted Hills barren, much to our visual and photographic delight."

Nice picture Thomas, and thanks for the link. When I lived in the Bay Area I used to love exploring the installations around there. I'm sure you've already been, but if not, Angel Island is a good adventure as well.

David, why limit yourself - you don't need to settle for just blondes, you can have the brunettes and red heads too

I exposed the same shot on Ektar and Acros as well...guess I'm just a film philanderer

Acros version of the shot. I find that the lack of soft green popping up out of the undergrowth removes the subtlety of the image and my eyes are just drawn right to the bridge.
