    Pink splotches on film

    Hello,,,

I am having a problem with pink splotches on my film after processing...

I'm using Edwal FG-7 w/ Formulary Inc. TF-4 archival rapid fixer....

I have increased fixing time to 10 min. and still have bad pink splotches...

Did I not get the fixer mixed well enough ..? I just got done with a batch of 50 e-6 trannies and they developed fine...

Also ,, I am using a Jobo processor w/ a 2840 drum to process the film...

    Thx
    Steve

Oh,, and film is out-dated Kodak 4127 commercial film from 1996

I processed some 11x14" Ilford HP5 iso 400 (3) sheets and had no stains...

The stop bath I am using is just water as recommended by the fixer manufacturer..

4127 is a very old emulsion design (1940s) and may not work well with TF-4. At least that's what your results suggest. But you're in unknown territory here; I'd try some fresh Rapid Fixer and a regular acid stop bath. That's what we used with 4127 (and all b/w films) when it was in common use in the lab.

Sounds like the antihalation dye was not completely rinsed off. Some films are stubborn
in this respect, especially with TF4. Longer or slightly warmer washing afterwards might
help. It also helps to do a plain water rinse after the stop bath so you don't acidify the
    TF4.

    Re: Pink splotches on film

I used 4127 at various photo lab jobs; it might have been ordinary powder fixer, and later, certainly Kodak Rapid Fixer at film (1:3) strength. That should clear any graphic arts film in 90 seconds or so. (3x the clearing time is the safe fixing time, IMHO). But if you're using a drum, perhaps the fixer isn't reaching the base side of the film. Have you tried re-fixing your splotched negs in a tray?

Ok,,, Drew yes Noted: rinse after acid bath,,, I haven't started re-fixing any yet..I wanna make sure I get a strong enough fixer.. Kodak powder form noted..

I ran that Arista 125 I was talking about and it processed with no problems...

Drew ,, your right the antihahlation dye doesn't wanna seem to come off in the pre-rinse phase.. I'm just using water as a pre-soak

I get the same thing with 8x10 tri x in a jobo print drum. My solution is after fixing, take it out of the drum and put the film in a tray with hca and it comes off almost immediately - then wash as usual.
    good luck
