    Southeast China in December

    Hi all,

I am going to China (Shanghai) for a conference, and because I have a one month ticket I'll have a lot of time for taking LF pictures...
Any suggestions? I'm interested much more in landscapes...
    Thanks,
    Barna

There is some extraordinary landscape in China. Not so far from Shanghai is Huang Shan, a reserve that contains some of the most beautiful granite peaks in the world, often shrouded in mist. However, you have to be in pretty good shape to experience the reserve as getting there and walking about can be terribly strenuous as many of the walks are very abrupt. You should give several days on Huang Shan to really appreciate it.

In the southwest are the Karst hills, which offer fantastic views of mountains shrouded in mist. For a visit of the region you would probably want fly to Guillin, and then make your way to Yangshuo. A trip down the Li river is a must, but don't waste your time on the big passenger vessels. Best by far to rent one of the small bamboo or PVC pipe rafts for an interesting ride. Interesting rides start at Yangshuo and a bit upriver at Xingping.

The terraced hills of Longsheng, about a 5-6 hour car ride from Yangshuo, are spectacular in all seasons.

Hope this gives some thoughts for your own research for the trip.

Ask about going to one of the several "water villages" while there...very cool.
I think we went to Wu-Zhen, then another nearby..

I forgot to mention Suzhou, which is very near Shanghai. Suzhou is traversed by water canals and is one of the most beautiful cities in all of China with many lovely gardens. Suzhou also has a very beautiful new museum, just opened a couple of years ago, designed by the Chinese-American architect Ming Pei.
