To Guðmundur : thanks for your comments and thanks for the pointer. In fact meteorological records refer probably to a period after the first systematic scientific records started on a regular basis, I imagine in the XIX-st century ?
And yes, of course I should have remembered that when the Vikings came to Iceland, the climate was milder around year "1K".
The stories say, probably in Eric the Red's saga, that apples could eventually become ripe in southern Greenland, some good years... too bad this came to a tragic end for the Viking colony in Greenland with the "little ice age".

But now in Iceland no problems for ripe bananas thanks to the geothermal power !
