    Epson v700 scanning problem...

    Hi everyone,

a friend of mine borrowed me his epson v700, as I wanted to try scanning some of my prints and transparecies. Till now I have only tried Epson scan software, and did not have any problem with "reflective" pictures. But when I tried scanning a 4x5 negative (without holder because my friend forgot it at home) it returned badly striped pictures, no matter what I chose as settings!

Knowing why my friend bought this scanner, probably he never tried scanning films, so he could be unaware of any problem! In any case these days it will be very difficult for me to get in touch with him... Please help!

I try to add an example. The stripes follow the direction towards which the lamp moves.

    Thanx!

I don't own the Epson V700, BUT - did you take off the cover on the inside of the lid??? For film it uses the light source from the lid!!!

You left the negative too high up in the scanner.

Epson requires at least an inch at the top edge (or an inch the whole way around) for it to correctly scan. I found this out the hard way a few years ago with a cheap all-in-one.

The holders traditionally have a cut-out on the top (where the scanner starts to move).

Try moving the neg to the centre of the bed and try again.

Thankyou Ash, that was the problem! Now it works fine...

(But I am sure I didn't read anywhere in the manual to avoid placing the negative too high up...... )

The film holders and the scanning area guide have a proper gap at the top. You cannot place the negative too high if you use them.

As sparq says. The bed is larger than A4, but cannot scan larger than 10x8.

Here is the correct guide, but as you see the bed doesn't even print the other side of it (right hand side of mask, so the left hand side when you look at the scanner). Scanned at 72 dpi for convenience of upload.

The second image is more useful to you. You should be able to print this on A4 (hard stock if I were you) at original size - save it, then open, print at 72dpi - and use it as your template. The original is flimsy, don't feel bad if you use plain paper!
