    Fuji A 240/9 versus Caltar II N 240/5,6 for 8X10.

I'm thinking to buy a 240 lens for 8x10,my choices are the Fuji A 240/9 and the Caltar II N 240/5,6 (a friend of mine is offering me one of this for ~700 US$).I 've read good things about the 240 Fuji in this forum, but primarily for 4x5 and 5x7 use, my question is: what's the best for 8x10 and Velvia use?-Themes: Lands cape and architecture-. I know the differences about the bulk and weigth, but th e most important characteristics for me are definition, contrast and ACTUAL imag e circle.( I think, the direct comparison in the booklets of the "big four" is n ot very accurate in the real world)Thanks in advance.Ramon

    Ramon,

If you think that weight is not a problem for you, then nothing beats Rodenstock Apo-Sironar-S 240/5.6 and Docter Apo-Germinar-W 240/8 for your 8x10 Velvia. Cheers,

Geoffrey, I agree with you, the 240 sironar-s is, maybe, the best 240 for 8x10, but the money is also important in my decision, remember: 700-750 US$ versus ~1500 US$, the filter diameter is also very important, I have a B&W 77 POL filter+ Tiffen series P 81a,81b,81c,80a,80b,ND graduated 0.6 and 0.9 etc.In conclusion: I want a maximum filter diameter of 77. (like the Caltar-Sironar-N). The Fuji A 240 is ideal in theory, but Fuji seems to be more optimistic than Schneider, Rodenstock or Nikon about the angle of coverage. I would like to know the quality of the Fuji A 240 at 168 mm off the center.

An alternative is the Fujinon-W 250 f6.7; listed coverage is 398mm.

I don't shoot Velvia, but I haven't yet seen any deficiency in coverage and de finition/contrast has been fine.

I use a Fujinon 250/6.7 for 8x10, it is very good (I mean not only sharp, and it is very sharp)and I never went out of the image circle with any movement that I used for my landscape photography. There is one to sell on ebay at this moment. (I do not know the seller! :-) ) I bought mine on ebay for slightly more than 700$.

The Fujinon 240 A appears to have more coverage than Fuji states. I tested it against a Fujinon W 250 f6.7. I focused the 250 at infinity, and noted where the image circle cut off. I, then, put the Fujinon 240 A on the camera, without making any other changes. The image circle cut off at the exact same place. It seems to me that that Fujinon 240 A projects an image circle of 80 degrees, the same as the Fujinon 250 f6.7. (Others, please correct me if I am wrong. My tests were conducted on a Wisner 8x10) The coverage of the Fujinon 240 A may be understated because, as a process lens, it if subjected to a higher standard of definition in the corners.

    Fuji A 240/9 versus Caltar II N 240/5,6 for 8X10.

Ramon, I just "upgraded?" from a Caltar S II 240 5.6 which was the Schneider Symmar version of mid '80's to the Fuji f9 A. IF all else was equal I'd say the 100 bucks or so I spent to do it was worth it for the decreased weight and bulk (I dream of having the time to do some ral backpacking before I'm too old).

Having said that I think the Fuji is contrastier/ sharper. The Symmar was pre- MC. I vignetted lots of 8X10 sheets with that Symmar. Don't have enough experience with the Fuji to say if it is a lot better coverage.

When I'm shooting old buildings out here where I live in central Nevada, I tend to grab my 240 f9 G-Claron. It's got an amazing circle far beyond what the manufacturer claims for it. The bellows on the 'dorff complains badly before I'm near the edge, and it's almost as small as the Fuji. The Fuji will definitely be my choice for many landscape pics. Having only done 1 sheet of Velvia with it so far I'm not the best qualified to comment. All in all so far I'm very pleased with it. J

I like the G-clarons too. I used a 240 G-claron for 8x10, but I ran out of image circle sometimes, with architecture. I replaced it with a 270 G-claron. I don't mind the slightly longer length, but I do appreciate the increased image circle.
