    anyone here into singhray filters?

to be more precise, the Slo-Mo ND filter and the Vari ND filter that singhray filters are offering.

i can't justify the huge amount of money the singhray ND filters cost compare to B+W.

as i will be using it on my 210mm (extra 1 stop) and 300mm (extra 2 stops), the singhray slo mo ND (5 stops) on a 300mm lens will give me a 7 stops cut off. plus a little bit of those reciprocity failure, i think i will be fine.

    what do you guys think?

singhray slo mo ND 77mm (5 stops) USD 250
B+W ND 64X 77mm (6 stops but with slight red cast) USD 183

    thanks

They are excellent filters, some of them are unique to the company.

I don't use those two filters, but I have never been disappointed in their products, they are all top notch.

I for one really would prefer never to have a color cast imparted in my shots because of a filter, especially from a filter that is supposed to be neutral.

I have one of their variable ND filters and love it. I think it is variable up to 8 or 10 stops. Very nice and well made. Can't remember what it cost but it was not cheap.

I have their polarizer, their reverse grads, and also their ND grads in 2 and 3 stops. Great filters, no problems. I went with the grads after having their polarizer for a year. I found it excellent. My filter kit is expensive but I consider it a solid long term investment. By the way, I went the Cokin P route so all my Sing Ray filters for that holder.

The variable ND is just two polarizers put together, right?

It look sto me as if the Variable ND is a circular (only) filter with 2 to 8 stops which are adjusted by swiveling the filter on the lens. Just like the polarizer. It does not say that it is also a polarizer - I do not believe it is. I do not own this V ND. I end up stacking ND's to get the exposure I need.

Also, since turning it on the lens changes the stops, the lens always covers the entire scene. For example, you cannot "just" effect exposure of the sky down to the horizon.

Vinny, I think it is just two polarizers. I have used this set up to slow water down on a sunny day. The glass is very good and you can adjust your exposure with almost unlimited possibilities. I also have a 13 stop B&W ND filter that you can look directly at the sun with... but that is another story!

To be perfectly honest with you - I have never run into a situation where I was hurt by stacking filters. Although - I'm sure there is a limit to where bad things start to happen, but I've stacked three filters (2 Singh-Ray ND's and a Polarizer) plenty of times and never had any kind of problems.

I would advise you to re-focus (ever so slightly) once your polarizer is on the lens. Every time I have used one, it has shifted my focus just slightly.

If you want to be covered with the vast majority of ND filtering situations, I would recommend you get a one-stopper and a two-stopper. Some people swear by hard-step, some people swear by soft-step - I have both, but most of the time use the soft. By stacking the one-stopper and the two-stopper, you have a 3-stop ND filter.
