Unhappy Arches National Park: Wall Arch Collapses

    Date: August 8, 2008
    Contact: Paul Henderson, 435-719-2140

Wall Arch, located along the popular Devils Garden Trail at Arches National Park collapsed sometime during the night of August 4, 2008. Rock has continued to fall from the arms of the remaining portion of the arch necessitating the closure of the Devils Garden Trail just beyond Landscape Arch.

I read that in the news, as well. It's a shame, but an unfortunate end-effect of how the arches form. At least the arch picked a good (safe) time to go.

Having fallen arches is never a good thing (unless there's a draft)

I can't believe someone posted this before Focusmag! I saw it this AM and immediately thought that Focusmag would have already posted this info. He must be slipping :-)

Now I'll have to look in the files and see if I made a photograph of it, on my one trip to Arches years ago. I seem to remember that scene. Usually it's my urban landscapes where the subject falls down (or more likely demolished).

    Oh, stop!

This one is right by the trail and it is large, it really could have taken someone out!

While I have images of it, I don't think it was one of the more spectacular arches there. It is just up the path from landscape arch which had part of it fall back in the 90's and it is much more fragile than wall.

Here is the story from one of our local papers...

Robert, thanks for posting that article. I haven't seen any other stories that have included a picture of what the "used to be" arch looks like now.
