    Type 55 in Besler

I have a huge pile of type 55 I want to print but do not like the way they sit in the standard Besler neg carrier.

I seem to recall seeing hold that had a slightly larger hole size, enabling the "effects" of the side marking of Type 55 to show. Is my memory distored or does such a beast really exist?

How are other printing T 55?
I could sent a spare out to be machined a touch larger I suppose, have others done this?

That is why a glass carrier is required.

You can file the carrier out yourself, to make any edge effect you desire. I don't know how limp and floppy that Poladoid film is. You may need to buy a glass carrier. For Beseler 45 series enlargers, I don't know why a couple of hinged sheets of good window glass with a black paper mask wouldn't work.

I seem to recall type 55 is about as thin as roll film, rather than thick and stiff like 4x5 sheet film. An oversize glass carrier would be best. Back in the "old" days, back in the 1970's, the few negatives that I did commercially on type 55, I just trimmed the negative with scissors to fit standard 4x5 negative carrier, but of course I was printing product shots, not going for "art" effects.

I have filed out a Bessler negative carrier, but it was for 35mm to get the effects so popular where you see the very edge of the captured image and part of the sprocket holes. Just doing the file thing to the 35mm carrier took quite some time, as the negative carriers are rather thick metal.

It is not just the issue of keeping it flat, that can be solved with a little tape to the neg carrier, stretching it flat.

Type 55 is slightly larger than sheet film, I currently notch the film slightly to allow it to lay flat. But the trim of the negative is clipped by the size of the hole. Sometime, it is nice to sloppy edges of a T55.

I may test getting a spare carrier machines out a little and then tape down the neg and see how that goes, unless there is a better solution....

I have a glass carrier for my Omega D5XL that allows me to include the rebate, but as Glenn mentioned, try making your own carrier from 2 5x7 (approx) sheets of glass and make a black paper mask. This would work for all sizes of negs where you may want to show the rebate or even the full frame...how about that concept? Not only do most carriers not allow you to show the rebate but they don't even let you see the whole frame...but I'm preaching to the choir here ;-)

I was hoping for a glass less solution, but I will try Glenn's suggestion this weekend.

    Thanks,

No, that will partially solve one problem, the second problem is preventing the film from "popping" or moving during the exposure. These two problems are totally solved with a glass carrier.

We heard today that Beseler has been sold so you might check on availability of accessories sooner rater then later. When companies are sold it is not unusual for items to be discontinued.

Thank you for the heads up,
When I bought this enlarger, I was given a box of spare parts, teflon wheel etc, but I will jump on any boards/carriers etc I may for see needing, I do not plan on changing this unit for many years to come if all goes well.
