Introducing 4 Corners Destination Trip in Southwest

Following up on our exciting destination opportunities to Le Bez, France and Kanazawa and the Noto Peninsula in Japan, we are adding a Southwest adventure to the 4 corners. This will be a week long shooting trip driving through some of the canyons and other points of interest of the Southwest. We will publish the details soon.

Registration for the Japan trip is in process and the deadline is July 1st. If you would like to inquire about the trip, please feel free to contact us.

In addition, we will be offering an informational session for these trips on June 12th as a part of 2nd Thursday Opening in the area. If you are interested in any of our destination trips, please stop by the studio for more information.

    Featured Photographers at Basho
Project Basho has been steadily attracting committed photographers through various programs from darkroom rental to Night for Emerging Photographers.

To feature these photographers and their work, we are starting a new blog titled "Featured Photographers at Basho." We will publish a series of interviews with photographers whose paths intersect with ours.

For the first issue, we are featuring Genevieve Coutroubis. She is one of the most active printers at our darkroom, and her photographic project revolves around Greece, the country of her heritage. Jessica Hoffman, one of our volunteers at the studio and a photographer herself, interviewed her for the first issue of Featured Photographers at Basho.

    Introducing Basho at a Glance

It has been a busy spring at the studio. We have hosted lectures, a movie night, and most recently, Night for Emerging Photographers which featured two emerging photographers. As the schedule becomes more complex, we wanted to be able to show what is going on at the studio to visitors to our website all of our offerings in a concise and organized manner.

For that purpose, we have implemented "Basho at a Glance" on our home page. On the home page, when you click the "Basho at a Glance" on the right, with a cool scrolling effect you can now see our current show, events, and upcoming classes/workshops in a single page. We hope this function will help people to see what is going on at Project Basho.

    Grid Project on Fox News

The Philadelphia Grid Project is a long term project which will photographically document the City of Philadelphia. It was conceived by Bob Cocozza, a friend of Project Basho Each month, photographers create images in a pre-assigned area of the city.

Project Basho has been engaging in the Philadelphia Grid Project since the beginning of the year, by hosting monthly meetings and organizing a workshop to go along with the project.

In May the Grid Project was shooting in North Philadelphia. Fox News came along to cover our activities, and you can watch the news clip on the Fox News site. Al For is featured in the piece. Al joined the Philadelphia Grid Project through our workshop, and is working on creating images of Philadelphia with his 4x5 Speed Graphic.

    Upcoming Classes/Workshops
Making Large Negatives with Large Cameras (May 31 & June 1)
    - In this hands-on two day workshop, students will work with large and ultra-large format cameras to experience the making of large negatives and learn the advantages of formats. A variety of format sizes including 4x5, 5x7, 8x10, and 7x17 will be available for shooting.

    Photographic Vision I (Evening class: June 2 - Aug 18, Day class: June 3 - Aug 12)
    - This class is for beginners who want to attain a basic knowledge of the medium of photography; from the use of a 35mm manual camera to basic darkroom practices.

Photographic Vision Color I (Evening class: June 3 - Aug 12, Day class: June 4 - Aug 18)
    - In this course we will explore the technical aspects as well as the aesthetics of color as a tool for expression. The primary emphasis of the course will be how to take advantage of color as an additional visual element to creating powerful images.

Fine Printing (Evening class: June 11 - Aug 13)
    - This class is for beginner to intermediate printers who want to deepen their understanding of refined B/W printing processes and who would like to develop their own sense of "a good print."

Re-Introduction to Photography (Day class: June 4 - July 2)
    - This is a five-week class for those who have taken a photography class before and who want a refresher course. The main emphasis will be placed on the thorough overview of basic technical skills such as understanding a camera, proper exposure, effects of shutter speeds and apertures, as well as composition.

Introduction to Black and White Darkroom (Day class: June 4 - 25)
    - You have a pile of B&W negatives that you have made and wonder what it would be like to make B&W photographs with your own hands instead of sending them to a photo store. If you have had this thought before, then this course is for you.

    Form and Content (Two weekend workshop: June 7 & 8, July 12 & 13)
    - In this two weekend workshop, participants will attempt to view their work in light of the fine balance between form and content. Through discussions and examples of work participants will understand the elements constituting form in photography and the different options available in the field as well as in the darkroom or on the computer.

    100 Pictures a Week (4 session class: June 17, July 1, 15, & 29th)
    - This is a class for those who want to produce more images yet need a support structure. The class setting will provide a pretext to photograph more under guidance and critiques with like-minded photographers.
