"Master Black & White Printing Class." With John Wimberley.

"Master Black & White Printing Class." With John Wimberley.
    September 19-21 2008, Tuition $230. Limited to 10 partcipants.

Printing in black and white involves much more than mechanical technique. It requires judgment and skill to translate our limitless, 3-dimensional world of color into rectangular, 2-dimensional, monochrome images that express something significant. Black and white printing requires enormous subtlety and the ability to integrate tonal values into a print that is more than the sum of its parts.

The Master Printing Class is open to all black and white film photographers who already possess basic printing skills, and who want to take their printing to a higher level. Because a fine print requires a fine negative, each photographer will have an opportunity for their negatives and prints to be critiqued by John Wimberley. Plus, we will examine all aspects of printing, from choice of paper and processing chemistry to optimum conditions for evaluating wet prints. Among the subjects to be presented will be techniques to arrive most quickly at the final print, thus saving time and materials, matching contrast and print exposure to the visualized image, dodging and burning effectively and invisibly, toning, processing and presentation for archival permanence.

John Wimberley has printed in black and white since 1967. His prints have been sold by more than 35 galleries and private dealers during this time, and are part of hundreds of public and private collections worldwide. In
1971 Artweek Magazine noted: "The first thing that one is made aware of is that the photographer, John Wimberley, is a craftsman of the highest order.
His prints are not merely technically correct, but wonderfully alive." And as the Monterey Herald wrote: "Wimberley's undisputed technical mastery of photographing and printing in black and white is but the springboard for visual poetry of spiritual realms." Many feel that he is one of the finest living black and white printers in the world. Please visit his web site at
