experience with 210 g claron on 8x10

through various threads it seems the 210 g claron will cover 8x10 (reportedly an i.c. of 345 @f45 at infinity). hyperfocal setting will bump it up a little higher. my question is to anyone who has actually used one - are the edges sharp? will it withstand a 5x or 6x enlargement or is it contact print only? the other lens i'm looking at is the sironar s 210. it will cover and give maybe 328mm i.c. at an average hyperfocal setting (22ft @f32), but this doesn't give much room. is it possible to increase the i.c. by stopping down more on the rodenstock? is the only real solution the 210xl or super angulon? i do color work almost exclusively. any insights are greatly appreciated.

My 210 G Claron seems pretty sharp at the corners. Not much by way of movements though. I'm afraid I don't have much experience with 5x enlargements of 8x10 negatives.

In truth I haven't had my G-Claron that long and I never enlarge 8x10 negs so you can weigh what I have to say accordingly. I imagine there is some image sharpness lost at the edges, I can't see it. Secondly, a previous answer is correct, do not expect a lot of movement. Boy howdy, what a great little lens though! Go have fun with it!

Adam, my Schneider catalog shows the G-CLARON having an image circle diameter of 260mm. You need at least 310 and that would be at f/22. The SUPER-SYMMAR 210mm is showing an image circle diameter of 500mm. More coverage, more hula! Steve

This lens will work dead center with sharp edges from contact prints (I cannot comment on enlargements). Very little room for movements.

You might think about the 240mm G Claron, about the same size/price, but the slightly longer focal length will provide a larger image circle without much difference in perspective.

There are two other 210mm lenses not mentioned here, which will cover 8x10 with room for movement and which should be cheaper than the 210 SS-XL or 210 SA. Both the 210 Apo-Sironar-W and the 210 Super-Symmar HM are designed to cover 80 degrees, for an image circle of more than 350mm at f/22 and infinity focus.
