    Size of Epson 3800 printer

    Hi to you all!

I am in the process of buying a new apartment and want to remodel the wardrobe into a small digital "darkroom". It is very small and I have to plan carefully so that both the equipment and myself fit in there!

I have a good idea of how large an IMAC computer and an EPSON 750 scanner are, since I was able to measure them at some stores. However, the EPSON 3800 printer is nowhere to be found unpacked so that I can take measurements.

Could a proud owner of that printer please help me with the following questions:

1 What are the printer's measurements with everything folded into the body? Please indicate whether in inch or cm.

2 What are the printer's measurements with the automatic feeder in the back folded out to its first (smallest) position (but the front still completely folded in)?

3 What are the printer's measurements with the subsidiary feeder in the back in position (and the automatic feeder folded away and the front completely folded in)?

4 Can I print papers of any size up to A2 with the automatic feeder folded out to its first (smallest) position? If so, how much additional space (distance to the wall from the upper fringe of the feeder) do I need?

5 Can I print papers of any size up to A2 with the subsidiary feeder in the back in position? If so, how much additional space (distance to the wall from the upper fringe of the feeder) do I need?

Re: Size of Epson 3800 printer

From the Epson 3800 FAQ--- http://people.csail.mit.edu/ericchan...n3800/faq.html

"When the covers are closed, the 3800 is 10.28 inches (257 mm) tall, 27.36 inches (684 mm) wide, and 14.88 inches (376 mm) deep.

When all of the covers are fully open and extended, the 3800 is 22.8 inches (579 mm) tall, 27.36 inches (684 mm) wide, and 37.87 inches (962 mm) deep. "

You can print A2 size through the auto sheet feed, the rear feed, or the front feed. I can make some measurements this weekend, but with the rear feed guide attached, the printer can still go very close to the wall. It extends up at a sharp angle, I don't know--maybe 6 inches. For an A2, you'd want the front paper tray (~24 inches?) extended all the way forward, otherwise the print will fall to the ground. Overall, it's a very compact printer in any configuration.

I use about 50 inches of depth for 16x20 inch stiff paper in the front manual feed slot. It feeds into the printer and protrudes out the back before printing.

So far I haven't found any paper that needed to go in the front (straight through) feed, and I use some heavyweight art papers. If you have something approaching the thickness of cardstock, you'd need to use the front feed, but otherwise the rear feed works well. I have my 3800 right up against a wall and the wall acts as a paper guide when using A2 sheets in the rear feed.

Thanks a lot Barry for the information received so far. It is very comforting to know that you use the printer right up against a wall.

    Just two additional questions:

1 I gather when you talk aobut the rear feed, you mean the rear automatic feed folded out only to its first (smallest position), right? Or do you mean the auxiliary rear feed?

2 Could you please tell me the the width of the printer in the position "right up against the wall", measured from the completely closed front all the way to the wall behind the printer? I would need that measure to see, whether a support for the printer of suitable width could fit into my wardrobe with still enough space for me to sit and work on the computer.

Re: Size of Epson 3800 printer

Hi Emil, my 3800 is located about 4 inches away from the wall. If I wanted to, I could put it right against the wall so that the rear paper feeder (for thick paper) is touching the wall. This is with the rear feeder folded out to its smallest position. I have had no need to open it further even with 17x22 inch paper. As it sits now, the width from the front to the back of the rear paper feeder is 18 inches. That is with the front door closed. If you want to have the front flap open enough to allow a 17x22 inch piece of paper to exit the printer and lay flat, you'll need about 40 inches from front to back.

    I hope this helps!

    Dave
