Try Reading Terminal. The upstairs is a train shed where Reading Railroad (SEPTA) trains depart for suburban stations and Atlantic City. Downstairs is the Reading Terminal farmers market. Any building by architect Frank Furness is worth shooting. This includes the University of Penn. library.

I used to work in Wilmington, DE and sometimes would route this way to the airport if the interstate backed up and my driver was in a hurry.
i would be careful in that area . not the nicest part of town . i think you are talking about the Chester , Marcus Hook area . right ?

also don't forget the Mutter museum and 30 th street station . you'll have to call ahead for the Mutter though if you want to use your camera .

I went to Philadelphia one, in 1976, but it was closed.

You don't say what kind of shooting you like to do. For general street photography, the Italian Market area (9th street north of Washington) is a rich time warp of food stalls and stands (and less touristy than the Reading terminal market, which will be overrun during the flower show).

Let me second the recommendations for Eastern State Penn and for the Navy Yard.

In general, Philly is a treasure trove of postindustrial ruins (which, fortunately for me, is a significant interest of mine), but you'll need to get (not terribly far) away from Center City (in almost any direction) to find that sort of subject.

There's a Calumet here if you need supplies.

Bill, I grew up in Philly in the 70's...are you sure you rung the bell?

I realize I'm pretty late at answering, and I hope that the trip went well; I'll throw my vote in for the Rodin Museum (sort of). It's on the Ben Franklin Parkway, between the Art Museum and the Franklin Institute, on the north side of the road. A 'Thinker' is there, along with several other works in an outdoor environment. Great place to stop and rest.

    hi all,

thanks for the info. i loved the naval base. the prison was awesome too.

my LF stuff is still drying but i scanned this one for fun! plenty of air traffic. i missed the bigger, lower flying jet and settled for this one! i have other better shots but this is the most fun. more when they dry.

i only have 35mm of the prison because they said no tripods before april. i will soup the 35mm negs tomorrow.

    thanks again.
