OK. It has been a while since I ran initial tests on my scanner but I didn't see a difference in resolution with the hold down tray versus wet mounting. However, I ran these tests on 4x5 rather than a USAF target. It could be that the hold down tray creates some softness.

One additional option is to get a piece of 3mm P99 non-glare acrylite cut and try it out as a hold-down tray. It should only cost you a few dollars.

    Peter,

would you say that a sheet of mylar and mounting fluid would be enough to keep the film flat on the Cezanne? I guess it depends on the amount of curl... I've never fluid mounted on the Cezanne and, if this works, I might use that method between now and when I get a piece of that p99.

Any plastics store in your area should have P99.

For wet mounting 35mm and 120, you would probably have to tape down the mylar. Even for 4x5 I believe this is best-practice. Are you experienced with fuild mounting?

I fluid mount when I drum scan but I've never done it on the Cezanne. Is 3mm the ideal thickness for p99 when used on the Cezanne?

I measured the thickness of the hold-down tray and it is about 3mm. You could try a thinner piece.

Yes, you can wet-mount on the Cezanne. Whether you need tape depends on your scanning fluid, the size of the sheet of mylar, and how curvy your film is.

I would get both a 3mm thick and a 6mm thick piece. The heavier piece will tend to stay flatter, but given the current problems with the original hold down plate, it might be worth testing.

I think it was you (maybe someone else) who mentioned a vendor for the p99. I can't find it locally. Can you pls remind me? Was it Focal Point? I seem to recall there was another place where I could place an order for custom sizes.

    Tnx

Ive been thinking about the focus issue with Mdala's scanner. I scan 99% of the time, E-6 and B&W and just dont see the problem.

Is it possible, the focusing mechanism just doesnt perform with color negatives (having very low contrast and a variable density orangish mask built in).

Could this be the reason for film presets (uniquely for color negative film).

If it relys on contrast detection to focus, it may be seeing non screen difusion plates.

    Just a swag...
