The tree in the foreground is likely spruce. We have a mix of spruce, white pine, and fir trees. Cedar are very rare. But those exact details aren't important with SF. Some places along the coast like this, the canopy is thick and at normal height, the branches are not useful and get weather worn from wind as if on a mountain. I've got another shot with the aero ektar which is nice but I didn't perfectly nail the focus, which is an easy error with that lens.

Very interesting--did you do anything special to "pop" that sweetgum leaf at the bottom of the frame? I admit I haven't learned to anticipate tonalities in a mixed-hardwood forest yet--lots of "gray mush" so far.

It was hanging off the little ridge there, so I moved it up a bit to include it into the composition. The light was coming in from the canopy and I could see that the leaves and detritus reflected it nicely. A little bit of burning in of the shadows made it have a nicer "pop" as you say. I would consider a square crop, except I did compose it specifically with that in mind on the bottom of the frame.

Thanks for the liner notes--good to know that a leaf's cutin layer can work for you...I've been busted more than once by rhododendron blowing up an otherwise dark scene whilst I was shooting a DSLR.
