When I went to the Cazneaux Tree I carried a photocopy of Cazneaux's image folded in my pocket. I was going to find his tripod holes and use an uncoated lens from that era to, in effect, stand where he stood and see what he saw. Things didn't quite work out. Cazneaux had a sunny day, mine was cloudy. My lens should have been a 150mm instead of the 135mm. You would think that ground level itself would be geologically stable but it had changed. The tree must see hundreds of cameras and camera-telephones over the years and if it had a hand it would surely be laughing gently behind it.
