    Buggy CS3

This version of PS is still the buggiest I have ever used on a PC with consistent crashes saying "PS has encountered a problem and needs to close". This usually happens late in developing an image with allot of adjustment layers or in plugins like merge. I don't think this is a memory problem as I don't get memory related error messages and have 4g of memory and this happens even on small files like 70mb. I could understnad it on huge files. I also have a separate sata hard drive for PS scratch. What has been your experiences? Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Kirk

I see many similar comments over at PDN Forums about CS3. Just so you don't think it is Windows specific, there are some complaining about CS3 who are using MacOS X, though not exactly the same problems. You might try voicing your problem over there.

yes I have had problems as well , the dreaded "PS has encoutered a problem and needs to close". as Kirk says, it usually happens after spending time on a image, I have learned to save frequently. I have a intel 2 quad processor and over 3 gigs of memory. and also using Vista ultamate

Same thing has been happening with me. I thought it was as a result of the VERY LARGE files that I've been working on. Most typically it happens when I open up Shadow/Highlight. I've learned to save beforehand as well as do this adjustment in a flattened duplicate image instead of a merged layer.

I have had no problems. I run a dual core Intel, WinXP, 4 gigs, and lots of disk space. I routinely load and downsample 800 meg files, and my usual working file is about 250 megs, with a duped background and several layers. Bridge crashes on a regular basis, but not CS3. If you are in Windows, check the system error log to see if there are any messages there. Also check out whether you have anything in the background that might be screwing with your scratch file or memory useage. For example, I use a background diskdefragger, so I set it to only be active between 1 and 6 AM, when I hope I am not active.:-)

Ed, I too run a dual core Intel XP with three internal drives, but Bridge never crashes anymore while PS does every hour or so!

When did you last rebuild your machine? Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling photoshop? Are you up to date with Windows patches? Are you running the /3gb option in your boot.ini file to give PS access to 3 gigs rather than 2? What % of memory do you let PS use? If that gets too high, it can cream system functions.

    Re: Buggy CS3

Ed, I have reinstalled PS a few times. I am up to date w/windows patches. I am probably not running the /3gb option, I can't remember. Percent of memory is 65%. I have been stepping it down 5% recently with crashes to see if that helps. I have nothing in startup file running in the background.
    Thanks,

Not for me any more since I switched back to CS2. For now.
