    They look good in photographs whatever the reason.
    I don't know if anyone answered this but covered bridges were used because horses are afraid of high places. The bridges were covered to make the horses think that they were going into a barn.

    Pretty clever! And the poor horse fell for the same trick over and over again?

    Lots of them throughout the Midwest. West-central Indiana has a Covered Bridge Festival in October covering two or three counties, I believe, which is reputed to bring in over a million visitors during the course of a couple of weeks or so. I try to avoid the area at that time... Turkey Run State Park and Shades State Park in the middle of the area and some of the most interesting landscapes in Indiana.

    I think this is the bridge over Coos Bay on the Oregon coast, I don't remember the name of it, but I am sure someone will let me know.
