A patch is handy and works well when it is necessary to frequently go from the darkroom to a well lit area. For instance - I teach at a community college. On lab nights I spend my time going from the well it inspection area into the printing room. When I use a patch I gain vision faster when going into the printing room.
I don't see an advantage when working with a dark cloth while outdoors making photographs.

Photographers who go in and out of the darkroom constantly can crush beer cans with their irises!

I think a lot of "dry-down" our students have is due to looking at their prints immediately after coming out of the darkroom -- the first impression they get about their prints is with dialated irises, thus they think their prints are a little light. Then they go back in, add a second or two...then combined with the physical dry-down of the paper, their prints lose that sparkle they thought they had.

For just the reason Vaughn gave, I have the lights just a little lower in the room outside the darkroom where I check the print exposure. Helps with the eyes readjusting to the darkroom too, although I have a pretty bright sodium vapor safelight...

But the pirate thing sounds like fun. Maybe we should add a pirate-smilie...

Perhaps, but I doubt it would work as well. The idea is to entirely deprive that eye of all light to get it's highest sensitivity up and running.

I know that it sounds silly but I use it only when I am having trouble seeing the GG. It takes about 15 minutes for the eye to adjust but it really helps with focusing. Now I am starting to feel a complex coming on.
