most likely the board will get 10-20 thousands appliicants and award 5-10 and I wouldn't be surprised if none of them are photographers

Re: California Residents: grants to artists for equipment and/or marketing

I just finished my application (last minute..what's new) as it's due in hands tomorrow. Finished at 3:30..went to Kinko's, made the requisite copies, packaged and FeDex'ed overnight.
Myself and Per Volquartz attended a seminar they hosted here in Riverside a couple months ago. This is the second of three rounds of Grants until the Irvine Foundation money dries up.

One grant is essentially for materials and equipment ( I listed my desires..Fuji 600C and 240A) along with a myriad of printing supplies. Oh, and I threw in a Chamonix 11x14 camera, a couple holders and film for same, because it's just necessary! All totaled I requested $11,800 out of a possible $15K per applicant.

Stats for first round were only 550 applicants and 35 grants awarded at an average of $7500.00 ea. Not bad odds for grants. They said they anticipated about 8-900 apps this rounds, and have been actively "seminar-ing" around so I expect more apps than that.

Still a 1:15 odds from first round is encouraging.

If you don't apply, you get what you gave.

    Sorry Vinny...

One thing I remembered asking was whether the approval panel was looking for specific projects from applicants, and if so, were those applicants more likely to receive over a non-project oriented applicant. I want to remember that the answer was vague...as I have not written a grant before, I did not bullshit (as much as I wanted) or list a big project.

I also remember they do not favor accomplished artists over fledgling types either.
The work samples I think will carry more weight than the worded text.

    So I'm screwed either way...

Matt, good luck on getting your 11X14 from Uncle Arnie. Makes me want to apply to get a 12X20- I've certainly given him enough in income tax the last few years!
