    8x10s on Epson V750

    Hello,

    First post!

I have been reading through a lot of the scanning threads and I am considering getting an Epson 750.

I specifically want to use it to make wet-mount scans of 8 x 10 negs (both color and b/w).

Is this fairly easy to do on the V750? (it would be my first time trying wet-mounting)

Is it feasible to expect that I could make good quality prints up to the size of 30" x 40" from the scans?

Is this the best option out there short of a pro flat-bed scanner or drum-scanner?

    Thanks,
    -ad.

I haven't printed that big from 4x5 but the detail isn't an issue - you can a very high amount of the detail out of your film or transparency. At 8x10 the limiting factor would more likely be the capacity of your computer to deal with the huge files than anything else.

The difficulty comes in colour rendition, and capturing dense areas of the film (extreme highlights on B&W negatives, or darker shadows on transparencies). It's pretty good though and colour matching can be pretty close. With properly exposed negatives it's not much of a problem. Some transparencies can be annoying, but I find that's the exception rather than the rule.

I've never done wet scanning though I hear it makes a big difference if you do it right.

The wet mount tray for the 750V does not handle 8x10, only up to 5x7.

I use the 750V for my 8x10 scans. Good results. I use a piece of anti-newton ring glass overtop the film to keep it flat. Far less mess than wet mounting.

Interesting, so is there even a way to wet mount 8x10s for the V750? Walter, because you are not using the wet mount tray or the film holders, do you have any problems over optimal focal length of the lens if the film is placed directly on the scanning glass?

What is a wet mount scan and why is it done? Pardon my stupid questions, but I'm getting caught up on some of these new procedures after a 20 year hiatus.

    Deane -

Here are some resources I have put together on fluid mounting. You might want to take a look and see how fluid mounting is done:

Thanks Doug. Only one of the three links on that site is still active, but I was able to watch the video demonstrating Aztec products. That looks like a scary procedure. I can hardly envision Ansel putting those fluids on the Moonrise negative.

Seriously, I am learning a great deal from the discussions on this forum and when I'm comfortable I have it all figured out, will move on getting a scanner for my 4X5 and 8X10 negatives.

    Doug or anyone who knows,

So is it possible to fluid mount an 8x10 on the V750? And if not what is the best way to scan 8x10 negs on it?

    thanks,

Put the neg right-side up in the "film area guide" and run a scan?

    heheh

    right on.

so what can I expect in quality from a scan made this way? Could I pull off goodquality prints sized 30" x 40" from the scans? Or is this unrealistic?

Sorry if these are obvious questions, I am doing my best to pick up the intricacies of digital (long time analog user...)
