    Leonard,
The idea is to get an out-of-focus dark edge to separate light toned things from their surroundings. It takes two exposures and two light sources.
First, open the background light - the subject appears as a dark silhouette. Shift the lens-board slightly forward to enlarge and defocus the subject. Expose.
Second, close the background light and open the foreground light. Shift the lens-board back to normal focus. Expose again.
It looks horrid when it is overdone. Hope this will be useful.

Well, this certainly does not look horrid. Very nice. I've been making pictures for over 35 years and always learn new things from the folks of this site. Thanks someone!

    Re: Flowers Anyone?

I had never had a go at flowers before, but last Sunday over first cup of coffee on the front porch I was looking at these blossoms on some Hosta and figured it might be a fun excercise, so I had a go at it. Let me know what you think.

Wow! Some amazing images in this post. Here is my humble attempt. I could put this in 2 other image posts as it is a still life and an alternative process image. I shot this on green sensitive x-ray film 8x10 with my 12" Gerogon. Printed in carbon transfer.
My scanner gave me a weird line through the image, and kind of mucked up the second image. Both images are very clean.

Soft focus (?) lens experiments. Both shots with a Canham 4x5 on E100VS, the first taken with a 7 1/2" Wollensak Velostigmat Series II at f/4.5, the second with a 9" Verito at f/4. Kind of interesting, to my simple mind anyway.
