It almost looks like crumpled paper in that shot. I like the rim lighting on the leave and such.
I have trouble articulating my thoughts on photography, maybe because it's a visual medium and words, well, words are inadequate. 'Soul' was a silly term. I suppose I mean that I tend to prefer more expressionistic images rather than literal ones. That's why I lean toward old fogged film and imperfect optics, although straight photography can still be expressive. When I take sharp, literal photos I am often disappointed. In the end I want to feel something when I look at images--that feeling can be amazement, wonder, surprise, fascination, confusion, envy, etc. That's my litmus test: if I feel nothing looking at my own work, it doesn't pass.
But enough analyzing! I have another negative to develop (non-floral this time) and maybe it will meet my own narrowly defined standards....

P.S. The lighting for the photo of the poppy is direct sunlight. I took the flower in its vase out into the backyard today and draped some black velvet behind.
Well, I guess you could call these flowers...

Another kallitype - been doing some experiments with matching the subject and the paper - the roughly textured Arches Aquarelle Torchon here - however, I don't think it's ideal for kallitypes...
Dried and rotting... by andreios, on Flickr
I pressed the wet goopy negative against a small sheet of glass and scanned the result before it dried.

Kind of looks like one of my underpaintings. Pretty cool effect.
