Epson 3170 Photo running on Mac

I just don't seem to be able to get this thing running properly - the hardware seems ok - but the software just won't play nicely. It keeps crashing, locking up - anyone else experience this or have a workaround?

I also don't seem to be able to find a way to get it to scan color negatives.

I have this same scanner but am using it in Windows environment. Works reasonably well with the supplied Epson software (although I bought SilverFast too) - if you have not tried it, download a demo version of the SilverFast (it's available for Mac OSX too) and try it. Or try a different software.
