    "no film" photography stores

so, is this what it's finally come to...?

One of Canada's major photo/camera chains - Vistek - opened up a store in town here.

They are probably the major pro-store chain in Canada (there are better individual/single stores).

Anyway, they've been here maybe three months now, fancy flagship store etc etc.

But apparently, they aren't bothering to actually stock film... hmmm

Odd, they stock it in Toronto. Having said that, when I called them a month ago inquiring about RVP 50, the moron in film sales was not even aware Fuji had brought back Velvia. Fortunately, we are well stocked here in Montreal (sheets only, no one carries Quickloads or Readyloads).

JP, they can order it for you from their other stores, but right now, the new store isn't even set up to carry film - so I was told (no fridges amont other things).

You don't actually need film to set up a brand new photogrpahy store...

    -snip-

a few years ago one of those "Petsmart" chain stores opened up locally. They made a big point about how they do not sell pets, only supplies for pets. Ah well, maybe that's the new trend.

Very believable story. I was in Vistek the other day and I think they would rather not carry film at the Toronto store anymore either. You would think Velvia news didn't make it to Toronto. Small town I guess

I went ahead and ordered Velvia from Eight Elm Photo and they had it for me in two days.

Mail order is the only option for most film now IMO. I have accepted it and moved on.

I never thought I would see the day when film availability was better in Montreal than Toronto. How many labs do you have left processing 4x5 (E6)? We are down to two here.

In the newly remodeled B&H superstore, there is probably more space for telescopes and binoculars than there is for film and darkroom gear. Maybe New York is more of a birding, sports, and opera kind of town than it is a film photography kind of town.

Why is this surprising? The vast majority of people who photograph these days do so without film. Sure, it's depressing from our standpoint, but pretty understandable from a business perspective. Have you seen the B&H catalogue lately? There's like 30 pages devoted to digital cameras, and but a single page for large format cameras and supplies...

The film prices in Albuquerque are so high, that I consider them "no film" photography stores.
