Hi,
I want to attach a spirit level to my tachihara but I don't want to use any kind of adhesive on the wood. Velcro seems to me to defeat the purpose as you can't assume the item velcroed is particularly level to start with. Any ideas?

Does that camera have a hot shoe? If so, get a hot shoe bubble level.
I just bought a few off of ebay for about $10 each.
Nah, I use hotshoe spirit levels but this one doesn't have one.
Go to a store that sells used gear and ask for a cold shoe. (You don't need a hot shoe!) Attach the shoe to the camera and the two way level to the shoe.

Where do you want to put the level? On the top of the camera? On the rear standard? On the front standard?
Kaiser makes a small bubble level that mounts with a couple of screws. But it is best and most accurate to use the same level on the top of the camera, then on the ground glass and on the lens board when you want everything to be aligned.
Stick the level in your pocket. When you set up your camera, set it on the camera. Level. Return the level to your pocket.
A half pint bottle of whiskey duct taped to the top of your tachi makes a fashionable statement!

Sears sells the loose bubble level for about $2.
If you want a hot/cold shoe level, get them from ebay where they are $8 each.
