Broken film developing hangers still usable?

I recently bought a batch of used 4x5 developing hangers for b&w tank processing , but a few of them are missing the closing gate at the top where the film is in serted. Can these hangers still be used, or will the film escape from the hange r during processing? Has anyone had the same experience?

    Thanks for the help.

Broken film developing hangers still usable?

Dan: You might make a usable gate from stainless steel wire, which you can get at model airplane hobby shops. I have built a couple in the past. Why not try a test using some junk negatives? They may be o.k. as they are if you don't move them too quickly in the chemistry.
