Shooting, rugs, carpets and other fabrics

I'd like to make pictures of rugs, carpets and a few fabrics designed by a certain artist.

This will be part of the artist's portfolio. A large part of it will probably be done in 35mm.

However, I'd like to do a few special pieces in LF; nothing beats a 4x5 slide for the "ooh" effect.

I do not have large enough studio lighting, so I will be relying on the goodness of the sun in a shaded area, using primarily my trusty 180mm Schneider, or for a few close-ups, a Nikon 120mm macro lens. Should I bother with a 90mm for anything? For film, I'm thinking Astia will be the best choice. The camera will be a wooden field camera (is that a mistake?).

Any thoughts or suggestions from anyone who has done this would be much appreciated, including (but not limited to) ideas on framing/perspective (do all shots have to be straight on?), film, lens, lighting.

Side lighting to bring out the texture.
You can even do it with the sun.
Put the object in the shade and then use a mirror to bounce in some side lighting to pop the texture.

Thanks Robin, I'll keep that in mind.
