Try an "Outdoor High Key Portrait". Go to Super Target or Wal Mart and buy a Hotel Fabric Shower curtain. They are translucent and measure 72" x 70". Stretch the shower curtain on a portable background stand and position it where the sun is behind the curtain shining through it. Pose your subjects in front of the shower curtain and use reflectors to bounce the sunlight back to fill the shadows or use fill flash. This works best on a sunny day rather than on an overcast day.

Sorry to hear the news of your father and wish your family the best in these difficult times.

    William,

one simply idea, place a 3/4 length mirror at the camera position facing your in-laws so they can see themselves as the camera does. They can make smalll subtle adjustments and be active participates. Fast, easy and comfortable for them.

That lovely idea is from Peter Gowland's "How to Photograph Women" years ago.

    Best wishes for your project.

Re: Questions: A Portrait of my In-Laws

I want to thank everyone for their time and thoughts. I have printed out the thread for careful consideration over the next few days. It looks right now that I'll be doing this and a couple of other family shots over the first weekend of June. I'm excited and humbled by the opportunity that I'm trying to make here.
