Epson 2450 measured against later models

    Greetings.

I'm using an Epson 2450 flatbed scanner to scan 4x5 B/W negatives to print no larger than 11x14 on 13x17 paper. Besides the obvious difference that progressively newer models of this scanner feature higher scanning resoultions, are the newer/latest models better in some way other than this feature, i.e., if I upgraded this unit would I have a better chip, lens, motor, software, etc. I was just curious if I would see an appreciable increase in print sharpness with a newer scanner. Thanks again, as always.

It depends on how you define appreciable. At 3x enlargement, I really doubt you'd see enough difference to make you want to spend the money.

Off the top of my head the 2450 will realistically do 1200dpi. That should almost make a 16x20 at 300dpi. Some run it at 2400 dpi for twice the capability but not twice the resoution. If only printing 11x14 you won't gain a thing except some higher dmax and maybe better color. I would actually argue that a 200 dpi output at 16x20 and larger is perhaps sharp enough for most of us. That's what one of my labs requested a few yrs ago and that was for even wallet size prints where sharpness would be more critical since the print was so small. I'd say spend your money elsewhere.

I seldom print any larger than 16x20. I scan (with my 2450) at 2400dpi, do all Photoshopping at that resolution and then resize for printing. It works OK. I may upgrade to a V750 one day but not today.
