Large Format Film And Digital Processing

For those interested in a rational and thoughtful discussion of film and digital by a LF (5x7) photographer and pioneer in b&w "fine art" digital printing, the current issue (#69) of Lenswork Extended contains a very interesting and informative interview of Tyler Boley by Ralph Jensen along with a gallery of Tyler's magnificent photographs of the Pacific Northwest. Tyler is very well known in the b&w digital printing community for his pioneering contributions to scanning and b&w digital printing. The CD costs $12.95 for non-Lenswork subscribers and $7.95 for subscribers (though you may have to ask for the $5 discount if you're a subscriber, it doesn't show up on the order form). Needless to say, I have no connection with LensWork except as a subscriber. I just thought it was nice to see something rational and thoughtful about this topic from someone who has extensive experience in darkroom and digital printing and who was/is a master of both.

The most astounding thing about Tyler, IMHO, is that not only is he an excellent photographer who can really see, and an expert printer who works his tail off, it's that he is so generous with his time contributing so much to a number of forums on printing. I don't have any idea how he manages to pull it all off, and so darn well. I'm just grateful that he does, and that he shares what he knows.

My only conclusion is that Tyler must not sleep much

Tyler and many other experts contribute to the Yahoo "digitalblackandwhite:theprint" forum. That's the one I follow most closely and of the ones with which I'm familiar I think it's the best digital b&w printing.

Yahoo groups DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint, EpsonWideFormat, and Piezography3000 come to mind. He participates on these and doubtless others.

His photos remind me why I hate the Pacific Northwest. A very dull landscape, wet and grey.
