    Linhof Electronic Viewfinder

    Hello all.

Recently I've heard about the Linhof electronic viewfinder for the Technika 2000. To my surprise there is almost no information available about this device.
Can anybody tell me about it's specs and history?

    Thanks & regards
    Stephan

There is no electronic finder. There was but it did not work properly under all conditions and it was cancelled shortly after the 2000 was introduced. All remaining inventory was returnrd to the factory when these were recalled.

If you need a finder the only choice is the Multifocus Linhof finder.

    Thanks Bob.

I don't need a finder, I'm just curious about this thing, it's construction, how it (didn't) work.
The reason why one of these is so hard to find you just told me :-)

    Regards
    Stephan

It had an IR sender that mounted to the lens standard and a receiver window that stuck through a small opening in the top of the camera into the body. It was supposed to work with 75 to 360mm lenses but didn't work properly with 240 and longer lenses. Lenses were cam coupled electronically by our service center on a special computer that could have no other software installed. Otherwise it crashed frequently.
The rangefinder did not work under high contrast reliably and it was thrown off by patterns like fencing or herringbone tweeds. The fider frame corrected for parallax and frame size (so does the Multi Focus Finder) and was not as bright as the MultiFocus finder. The finder had a projected frame that rotated automatically from horizontal to vertical.

    Thanks for the information Bob.

Actually it sounds like an interesting approach. Too sad it failed...

This was a fascinating technological effort but frankly I don't think it would have lasted even if it had worked. Bob may correct me but IIRC it added a whole lot to the cost of the basic 2000, something like another $4000 or thereabouts? It's hard to imagine too many people would have paid that kind of money for an add-on to a camera that cost $5000 to start with. Or on second thought, maybe anyone who could afford $5000 for a camera wouldn't have minded another $4000 or so for the rangefinder. But regardless, it was a great try. I'm kind of surprised though that Linhof would have brought it to market without sufficient testing to make sure it worked proplerly.
