How do you measure for incident system?

I wonder how do you use the incident light meter for BTZS. I understand how to measure shadows but I am not sure how to measure highlights. For instance how do you point the meter dome when measuring backlit scenes? If you point the dome toward the lens it will be shaded even though you place the meter in light. The same, I guess, would apply to the scenes lit with side light but to lower extend.

Even some of the stringent BTZS people use a spot meter for these situations.

This month's issue of View Camera has a good concise article on BTZS.

I measure the high values by tilting the meter a bit and getting the dome kind of half in the sunlight. It's been a matter of experimentation - it's the art part of photography, not the science.

You will get much more useful and relevant information on BTZS metering by posting this question on

    www.btzs.org

However, If I was shooting the scene you describe I would point the incident dome straight toward the backlight component of the scene at the same angle as the camera lens and take the shadow reading directly toward the camera again at the same angle, don't shade the dome. ExpoDev will then compute the exposure and development based on the SBR reading of the scene.

    Hope that helps.
