    Which Scanning Service?

Any suggestions on a good professional scanning lab? I'd like to get drum scans made and am concerned about quality. I know a lot of photographers use WCI and Photocraft. Any experience with those? Thanks.

    Hi Andy,

I have used Bill Nordstrom (Laser Light Photographics), founder of EverColor Fine Art as my Master Printer for the last 12 years. I have been very happy with his service and we have always worked very well together and have much mutual respect for one another. I am his 7th customer (007 ) and as such and have been a big client so I do get special pricing so I can not say what the usual pricing is. It would be worth contacting Laser Light at:

Bill may not be the cheapest, but as I said he does outstanding work and you get what you pay for.

West Coast Imagining. A 16-bit, 400 MB scan on their Heidelberg Tango scanner, will set you back $69.95.

But that is only about 1800 DPI for 4x5. A 2400 dpi scan is 109.

The differential pricing always anoys me. Most of the work is in mounting - why the huge differential for all of the services for the extra time spent spinning the drum to get more data?

    Hi Ed,

Time and storage space are always a premium and we get charged accordingly. The longer the time to scan the less the time available for other work to be scanned.

That scan will give you a 30x40 (at 300dpi) or 40x50 (at about 230dpi or so) print.

WCI and NancyScans are two good sources.

Yes and no. You have to sample at 2x the level of detail that you want to put on paper. I would see it more as 15x20 or 20x25 as regards the real detail captured.

I don't know Ed, a 400mb file for a 15 X 20 or a 20 X 25 print size is a huge file. Bill Nordstrom normally archives my files at around 225 to 300mb if we need really large prints from my 4 X 5 transparencies off either a Chromira or Lightjet. The machines can have the resolution adjusted. I think for some of my 30" x 37 1/2" prints off of the Chromira may have been around 100mb or so RGB; the machine resolution was adjusted. These are some of the sharpest prints that I have ever seen in the equivalent to a 30 X 40.

Sure I have seen images printed from 500mb files, but that is normally way beyond necessary.
