    5x7 tachihara...5x7 shen hao...experience?

Hi. I have found precious little review info on either of these, and am wondering if either is recommended. I ask specifically about the 5x7 because this is the format of interest to me, and I don't know if the respective designs differ from their 4x5 counterparts.

Also. I'm a little afraid of the Tachi...it seems to pretty to hold up well.

    Thoughts...?

I am new to all this, but have the 5x7 Shen Hao on order- I can let you know my thoughts in a few months after I figure out how to unfold it . Seriously though, I ordered through Rob at BigCameraWorkshops, and he said that the 5x7 Shen is much superior in build to the 4x5 version, hence the higher price. No idea on the Tach.

The 5x7 Tachihara is a nice camera, but it weighs more than 8 pounds. Ouch!

The 5x7 Tachihara that I had experienced terrible light leaks through both the front and the back. My advice would be to perform the old flashlight test on any potential purchase.

The tach doesn't use Technika lensboards, and the Shen has plain ground glass. Both are impediments to my buying either one.

    Interesting feedback...

I bought one about a month ago. No light leaks. Does take Technika lensboards.
GREAT camera. Not heavy at all...quite light, actually.

Velly intelesting -- I was going to buy a Tach and called Midwest, who assured me that it takes the same board as the 8x10, not a Technika board. So I gave up.

The 8x10 Tachihara takes Sinar boards as well as a thicker proprietary board that's not backward-compatible with Sinar cameras. I believe the 5x7 is the same in this respect. MPEX usually carries an inexpensive Technika adapter board that fits both cameras; I've sometimes seen the cameras sold with the adapter board included as standard equipment.

The 5x7 Tachi I had beiefly used Technika boards and was well built. It was abit too flyweight for my taste but everything locked down and worked nicely, at least with a moderate sized lens like a 210 Sironar/Copal 1.
