    Warm or Cold Scanner?

Just based on casual experience, do you find your Epson 4990 scanner (or similar) performing better -- generating less noise -- when it is freshly turned on (cold) or after it has been running (warm) for a few hours?

No commenton the noise but a scanner does need to arm up for a few minutes befoe it is ready to go. In fact many of the high end scanners have cycles to warm up the light sources befoe they will scan.

Mine works better cold (4990). The first two scans have less noise than the third, so now I wait 5 minutes or so between scans and allow the machine to cool down.

    Re: Warm or Cold Scanner?

If you are using multi-pass scanning to lower noise in Silverfast with a 4870, 4990, 1800f or m750 (the ones I have tested), you need to have a warm scanner and a warm negative. Otherwise, as the sanner/negative warms up during the passes, you will get changes in scan dimensions that are too large for the registration program in SF to compensate for.
    Thanks,

Generally electronics works better at a stable temp. I leave my scanner (9950) on all the time. I do not seem too plagued with noise.
