John Mug of Chicago passed away of Friday. A lawyer by trade who was forced into early retirement by illness. A former "mature" student of mine at the Art Institute, he died of complications from a recent lung transplant.
I remember John Mug seeking me out in the Labs at SAIC some years ago with an insatiable curiousity about LF. He subsequently bought a Deadorf and later took my architectural photography class. He worked hard at learning LF even in the face serious life threatening illness. He was always in good humour and bravely matter-of-fact about his future.
Last year, ill and facing an uncertain future, he fought through and curated a show at The Art Institute entitled "Active Liberty", a group show of political art. I was honoured to participate.
Some of you may remember him from the View Camera Conference last year, particularly if you went out to dinner with us that one night.
We exchanged emails often about various things. I talked to him about a week and a half ago and at that time he was recovering well from the surgery.
John Mug, great guy, good friend, true gentleman, activist, artist, large format photographer........you will be missed.
