The Compact was the first 8x10" camera that Richard Phillips made for the market.
Ridged, light, simple with short bellows and rack and pinion focusing and costed less than a grand initially. The Compact II is the very peak of Dicks camera making; ridged like no other field camera and still very light, with side swing/sliding extension and lead screw focusing. This is probably the most sought after of them all and sold for close to three grand last time it was available.

    Compact:

    • natural wood color
    • very simple construction
    • focuses via knob on the side of the camera
    • rear movement limited to tilt only
    • weighs about 7.5 pounds

    Compact II:

    • black finish
    • rear standard mounted on separate "feet", which allows for rear focus extension plus swing, in addition to tilt
    • focus via combination of rear standard extension plus lead screw at center rear of camera base
    • longer bellows; most (perhaps all) samples also allow shorter minimum bellows draw than on the Compact
    • usually (always?) fitted with a bail lift on the back
    • weighs about 8 pounds, some variation among different production runs
    • a bit larger than the Compact when folded
    • minor variations in camera components across different production runs - e.g., locking knobs, bellows, positioning of front-standard mounting holes on base

    Both are very rigid.
