750 owners

There was a string of posts from people talking about getting the V750. Any news on performance? Soon I'll be popping for a new scanner (to replace the 2450), and I've been leaning towards the 700.

It will definitely be an improvement over your 2450. From what I have seen in my scanning and from what has been posted online, I would only buy the 750 over the 700 if you knew for sure you were really going to use all the extra software and fluid tray options (otherwise, just buy individual items separately to add to a 700). The extra coating's value seems to be questionable at this point.

Any recommendation of the 4990 vs. the V700? I'll be scanning 6x6 and 4x5, probably 80% B&W. I'm planning to experiment with wet mounting. My main concern is the 4x5, but I'm guessing my 13" printer will push the 120 resolution somewhat. (I also have access to a 4800 for color.)

Jay, in my tests so far I would have to say that there are no advantages to the 700 (or the 750) over the 4990 UNLESS you are prepared to deal with the file size and scanning time investment involved at scanning at 6400 spi ...this applies to 4x5 of course. Since 6x6 will give you a much smaller file size and speedier scan then you may want to consider the 700 if you have a lot of 6x6's to scan. For 6x6 the 700 should definitely outperform the 4990 but there will still be a significant investment in file size if using all its capabilities. I do think that the 35mm and 6x6 market were the folks that Epson was thinking when they designed these new machines .... not us LF folks.

If 4x5 is your main concern then go for the 4990. As for wet mounting you can do that with care on any flatbed.

You might find the following to be a good viewing. It is in French, but the pictures tell the story. If they had tested and shimmed the holders on the 4990, they might have gotten even better results from it.

Ted, what would you reccomend for scanning 8x10?I have a 4990, the regular one, that I recieved as a gift.I haven't used it yet as I haven't had the time.When I got it, 4x5 was the largest I thought I was going to scan, but I have since aquired an 8x10 outfit and if another scanner would be better I could sell this one and chip in to buy a different machine.Thanks

Doug, thanks, I've seen the article, but I read through it very carefully this time...I don't read French. (grin) It's interesting how many words english and French share, so it's easy to get an idea of the topic.

Ted, I hadn't really considered the file size, but after trying to scan at max res, that would have slapped me in the face. I probably can't make full use of the scanner's capability until I upgrade my computer speed and memory. Now I can comfortably work with a 500 mg file. Most of the my current shooting is in 4x5, but I have 120 negs going back to the mid-80s, so I many more 120 overall.
