I'm looking for a new digital camera. I don't want pay more than $300. I want to take close-ups from far away. I want a decent flash for interiors. Is there there a big difference in quality between 5.0 to 7.1 megapixals?

Most people here use large format cameras (hence the name), which are generally thought to correspond to anything from 54 Mp and up to at least 1 Mp.
To us, both 5.0 and 7.1 Mp is low-resolution stuff.
You are looking in the wrong place. This forum isn't about digital cameras, especially those entry level ones.

They are all basically the same guts with different cases and software. Often times the lower megapixel cameras create smoother, less noisey images and work better in lower light.
I'd look for the simplist camera with the least features in your price range (contrary to the advertising). Kodaks are simple, Panasonics are a good value, and the major brands - Sony, Canon, Nikon, Olympus - all make nice cameras.
http://www.dpreview.com has the best overview and detailed reviews. It's forums are crazy though, so take individual advice with a grain of salt.
Thanks for the quick replies. This will be my second digital camera. I know that this is not technically a digital camera forum. But I am doing a lot of scanning of old photos and my searches directed me here. I thought that since there were references to digital cameras that I might get some good advice. I tend to go towards the experts first for my info. Thanks Frank for the links.
