Suggestions on Shooting Locations for the Vancouver Workshop with Per Volquartz

Greetings again,

Just as a follow-up to the posting on the workshop with Per Volquartz in September...

Does anybody know of any excellent locations for shooting in the Vancouver, BC area? We're looking for sites that don't require a long, long drive... perhaps, within about 3 hours?

Any inputs/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I like Britania Beach/Porteau Cove/Squamish area. It has a little bit of everything. Big peaks across the sound in morning light (Tantalus range), the Chief and Mount Garibaldi for those looking for an AA style "half-dome" fix (afternoon light), half sunken boats and other neglected stuff (think there are even some old cars abandoned in the bush around the little smoke bluffs), misty west coast mountins that run into the sea (for those atmospheric perspective freaks) and enough flora/fauna for anyone so inclined.

Possibilities closer to Vancouver proper might be: Steveston, Lynn Canyon, Seymour demonstration forest, Light House Park, SFU/Burnaby Mountain or the UBC endownment lands and campus.

UBC and the surrounding area has forest, Nitobe Gardens, UBC Museum of Anthropology, interesting architecture and beaches as well. September might be a little crazy with frosh activity and parking might be a little difficult, but lots of great shooting opportunities at UBC. With the exception of Wreck beach most of the spots are easily accessable with minimal trekking from the car. I don't think the nudists would appreciate us showing up at Wreck Beach with a bunch of cameras anyways. However, Tower Beach, Acadia Beach and Spanish Banks are all great beach locations if people are so inclined.

If we are continuing in that direction, Jericho Beach Park is another good location. Half manicured and half wild it's relatively diverse. Not as varied as UBC but maybe a nice stop on the way there or back. Bonus is that it is close to the Hostel if people are looking for low cost accomodation.

Steveston has the fish boats, historic cannery row, and Gary Point Park as attractions too.

How's that for a start? Can you tell I'm looking forward to this? :-)
