With regard to refurbs, once when I was between jobs, I worked at an Office Depot. I'd see customers buy things like scanners, printers, computers, etc., and bring them back to the store claiming they did not work. We'd always give a refund.
A factory rep came to the store every couple of weeks and checked the returns. He found that frequently, the package had been opened, but the device had not even been removed from the box. Our speculation was that the purchaser got home and had buyers regret, or realized they could not really afford it.
Anyway, the items that were truely broken were thrown away by the rep. The items that still worked were returned to the factory to be further checked out and sold as refurbs. In buying a refurb, you may be buying something that never had anything at all wrong with is.
