I haven't used either printer but I've seen a lot of good things said about the R220 on the Yahoo digitalblackandwhite:theprint group. You might try doing a search of that group to see what others have said.

Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you do criticize them you'll be
a mile away and you'll have their shoes.
I have a C86 and it has worked well for me.
However, I think things have moved on and if you are buying new, the R220 would be the way to go. Price is about the same either way.
Tonight was my first try printing a photo on our C82. Up till now I hadn't considered it and have only used it to print text.
I was very surprised by the quality of my test b/w prints, because: it is four color; I didn't use a profile; and most importantly I printed on ordinary paper.
It has enough potential that I have ordered quadtone inks from MIS, and samples of different coated papers.
