From that auction site. Are the marks around the rim harmless photo artifacts due to the lighting? And is this an earlier Componon-s, and is there any difference with the new one?
(I dropped my good lens. Kinda desperate to replace it.)

It looks like Schneideritis. Where the black paint on the outside of the lens elements flakes off or turns white.
Everyone says that it doesn't hurt anything but usually reduces the sales price.
My 150mm Componon-S did the same thing years ago. I sent it off to Schneider and thier reply was, since it has no effect on image quality, we don`t do anything about it, at least under warrenty.
Yep, Schneideritis. It looks like the paint is flaking off but I've never seen any flakes inside an affected lens. AFAIK its cosmetic only.
What everyone else said. Looks like a typical case.
Thank you for your help,
and Happy Holidays!
Schneideritis is one of the reasons I now have only Rodenstock lenses inthe darkroom.

What's with Schneider that they can't fix that problem? Or are they sure that the rest of us believe/know it is harmless so they don't bother? Seems pretty silly to have such a 'characteristic' persist over so many generations of lenses.

Good question. I have a newer greenring companon-s that schneiderized after only three years

Actually, Schneideritis affects lenses other than Schneiders- I have a Fujinon SW 105/8 that has it, and I've heard of Rodenstocks affected with this dreaded malady.
