Problem with Mounting Lens

So I picked up a Nikkor 210/f5.6 for my Toyo field camera. It is in wonderful shape but when I went to mount it to the lens board, I noticed I couldn't get a snug fit. So I took it apart and found something odd. Upon removing the lens elements, I noticed a tiny screw sticking up from the black inner ring which is surrounded by the aperture blade diaphragm (the diaphragm has 2 tiny screws attaching it to the shutter and they are fine). It won't screw in all the way so I took it out. For the life of me, I can't figure out what this does. I just took it out and everything seemingly works fine. I just wonder if I should have left it in there and if so, why?

The tiny screw (or pin) was attached to the back of the shutter, correct? Well, that's there to keep the lens from turning on the board. If you had drilled a tiny hole in the board where it interfered, it would have snuggled in there very nicely, and kept the lens fron turning in the board.

Just kidding! What you removed is called the 'key stone' of the shutter. It is removed when you want all the tiny bits to tumble out at once. Give it a good rap and see.
