    10” Wollensak Vitax

Does anyone know the size of the image circle on the 10” Vitax? Will it cover 8x10 with a vignette in the corners at, say, a waist-up portrait distance, or would the fall-off be so dramatic that it makes the image look more like a circle?

    Thanks!

I suspect it would cover 8x10 without vignetting, but be very soft in the corners. I was just surprised the other day that a 10" f3 Hermagis Extra Rapid petzval fully illuminated the ground glass on my 8x10. Though for waist up you might think about something closer to 12".

No, not even close. I have a 13.5-inch Vitax, and it noticeably nips the corners of 8x10 at infinity. The 10-inch might cover in a close head shot, but that's about it. None-the-less, there's a 10-inch being sold on ebay as an 8x10 lens. I informed the buyer some time ago, but he hasn't changed the description.

Yes, I should have added that I was speaking in the context of portrait distances. Haven't paid too much attention to the coverage at infinity.

I set my 13.5 inch version up and focused at 10 feet. About 1/8 of the lens opening was visible in the corners of the 8x10; so a 3 stop dropoff for that size lens.

I also have a 13" Vitax. I took this image with it last summer. The edges are soft at this distance, but not black.

I take it that no one here has actually shot with a 10" Vitax. I have one now, but the camera I'm going to mount it on is not quite ready to shoot. I'll report back to this thread on how it performs for 8x10. If it is way too small an image circle, I'll just use it for 5x7.
