    Filter Really Stuck...Help!

So...my fancy 82mm B+W ND filter is really stuck to my "bargain" step-up ring. Have tried my usual tricks...including using two light cords in opposite directions, and dunking the step up half into boiling water. Problem is, the seizing together took place as I was photographing surf - and my guess is that there has been some salt-related welding between the brass and aluminum components (why I tried the boiling water).

Anything else I might try before I fire up my dremel? (to use cutoff wheel to remove step up ring). Thanks!

If you do cut it off, make sure you thoroughly cover the glass before cutting and assure every spec of ground metal is removed.

    Did you try rubber gloves?

I've used a hair dryer to heat the step ring with success.

heat gun, for sure. Also, opposing strap wrenches if you can.

Try some deep penetrating oil. You may have to let it sit for a day soaking, but it has helped me break loose a few trumpet slides without damage. Trying pressure on rings with gorilla force, I have discovered, not so good since the added pressure distorts the ring somewhat, adding to the problem. Let the oil do its work and GENTLY get a grip to twist. Cheers!

You need a pair of lens wrenches, properly sized to apply pressure evenly around the circumference.
B&H Photo and other photo stores all sell them.

Alternatively, a thin flat sheet of rubber on the table.
Place the lens vertically with the filter on the rubber and turn it, applying downward pressure.

I would also try penetrating oil (Kroil is often recommended) before the dremel.

There are penetrating oil tests on Youtube.

Another vote for filter wrenches. They let you apply equal force to the two rings so uneven distortion does not make unassembly harder.
